The Advantages of Neutral Borosilicate Glass Containers
In line with the issue and implementation of China GMP and China Pharmacopeia 2010, upgrading the inner package material of medicine to meet international standard has become inevitable trend. According to USP, EP, JP, neutral borosilicate glass is the only available glass packaging materials for intravenous drugs.
Pharmaceutical glass containers, particularly injection ampoules and antibiotic vials, cartridges, prefilled syringes etc. related with patient's health even lives, in accordance with international practice must be made of 5.0 neutral borosilicate glass. this is because :
1. The most important criterion of pharmaceutical package containers is that the amount of leached alkai in the solutin must be as less as possible; otherwise it will seriousl affect the validity and safety of the medicines. There are strict requirements in the pharmacopeia of many developed countries in terms of the test methods and permissible amount for leaching alkai in the solution. Compared with any other kind of glass, drugs stored in the containers converted by 5.0 neutral borosilicate glass tubes, the amount of leaching alkali is minimal, and the drugs would not be deterioration due to reaction of leaching alkali and medicines.
2. Owing to container production heating process, the alkali compunds in glass evaporate and deposit on the inner surface. Moreover the inner surfaces are also degenerated because of heating flame. As a result, the amount of leached alkali will be inevitable increased when meds solution is filled. Therefore the amount of leaching alkali of glass tubes should be as less as possible while the 5.0 neutral glass is a kind of glass with minimum amount of leaching alkali in the world. The amount of leaching alkali for vials made of 7.0 low borosilicate glass after heating process is more than 2 times than that of Japanese or German vials.
3. In short, neutral borosilicate glass 5.0 with its excellent physical and chemical properties such as hydrolytic resistance, acid/alkali resistance, thermal shock resistance etc. is far superior to the 7.0 low borosilicate glass used currently.
4. In the case of the medicine solution with slightly higher or lower PH, neutral borosilicate glass as inner package material can be a good solution to eliminate the problem of glass flaking and also avid white spot caused by reaction of medicine in the period of validity. For lyophilized products,the fragmentation of vials due to the thermal shock during filling process shall be much less.
